Abstract
Hope is one of the most fundamental psychological needs of human beings and plays a vital
role in maintaining mental health and enhancing individuals' capacity to cope with life's
adversities. Conversely, hopelessness is recognized as one of the most prominent symptoms
and maintaining factors of depression. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the concept of
hope and strategies for overcoming despair in the Holy Qur'an and to explain how these
concepts can be applied within a therapeutic framework for reducing depressive symptoms.
Methods: This qualitative study employed a semantic content analysis approach. Data were
collected from the verses of the Holy Qur'an, authoritative Qur'anic commentaries (Tafsir),
and scholarly literature in psychology and religious studies. This approach facilitated the
integration of Qur'anic concepts with psychological mechanisms associated with depression.
Results: The findings indicated that the Holy Qur'an provides a comprehensive framework
for combating hopelessness and fostering hope through concepts such as God's boundless
mercy, the principle of relief following hardship, the prohibition of despair, trust in God
(Tawakkul) as active reliance, patience (Sabr) as a resilience-building mechanism,
supplication (Du'a) as a process of emotional expression and cognitive restructuring, and
remembrance of God (Dhikr) as a source of inner peace and psychological reassurance.
Psychological analysis of these concepts demonstrated that each is consistent with
established therapeutic principles in the treatment of depression and may contribute to
reducing anxiety, enhancing hope, regulating emotions, promoting cognitive restructuring,
and strengthening psychological resilience.
