Abstract
This study aimed to psychologically reconstruct the concept of "Al-Bughḍu Fī Allah" (Hatred for the Sake of God) within the conceptual network of the Quran and to examine the reflection of its components in the Ashura uprising. The main research question concerns how religious values are transformed into stance-taking and social action, considering that "Al-Bughḍu Fī Allah" is not explicitly mentioned as an independent term in the selected verses but is examined here as a reconstructed concept derived from a set of related notions including allegiance (Wilayah), disassociation (Barā'ah), managing relations with opponents of divine values, dignity, and the rejection of humiliation. The study is fundamental in purpose, employing a qualitative approach with a directed-exploratory qualitative content analysis method. First-stage data were collected and analyzed from selected Quranic verses and the commentaries Al-Mizan and Tafsir al-Quran al-Azim. Second-stage data were gathered and analyzed from historical accounts of the Ashura uprising in Al-Irshad and Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk. The findings revealed that three psychological components can be reconstructed for this concept: a cognitive component, involving the recognition and evaluation of value conflict; an affective-identity component, involving value-oriented aversion to falsehood, maintenance of dignity, and refusal to accept humiliation; and a behavioral-social component, involving relational demarcation and value-based action. The examination of Ashura accounts also demonstrated the reflection of these three components in the positions and conduct of Imam Hussein (AS). Accordingly, "Al-Bughḍu Fī Allah" can be understood as a cognitive, affective, and behavioral process with the capacity to explain the relationship between religious values, moral identity, and social responsibility; however, the empirical validity of this model requires independent psychological testing.
