Aim: The present study aimed to psychologically prioritize the marital model (monogamy vs. polygyny) based on the teachings of the "Sublime Family" in the Holy Quran.Method: This qualitative study utilized thematic analysis (thematic network model). The data included family-related verses of the Quran and authoritative interpretations. After extracting basic, organizing, and global themes, the resulting model was presented to an expert panel (15 specialists in Islamic psychology and Quranic sciences) for validation and ranking weighting. Content validity was assessed using CVR and CVI indices.Findings: Thematic network analysis identified components such as "realization of tranquility and affection," "practicing justice," and "psychological barriers to polygyny." Ranking results indicated that under normal conditions, the monogamous model is the primary priority with a relative weight of 0.85. Furthermore, psychological findings revealed that polygyny is associated with challenges such as somatization disorder, decreased self-esteem, and decline in family
Psychological research shows that women in polygamous marriages are exposed to more mental and physical disorders. Physical disorders, depression, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, psychosis, and problems in family functioning and raising children are common in these women. Their level of life satisfaction and marital satisfaction is low, and social and economic factors also affect the severity of these problems. Despite some economic advantages in rural communities and financial support for second and third wives, violence, social and emotional comparisons, and inequality between spouses exacerbate psychological harm and reduce family functioning.
In the jurisprudential and exegetical dimension, proponents of polygamy, such as Allama Helli and Shahid Thani, have considered the possibility of marrying multiple wives conditional on the ability to administer justice among them, citing the third verse of Surah An-Nisa. Opponents, including Shahid Motahari and Allama Javadi Amoli, consider monogamy to be the natural and desirable form of marriage and emphasize that justice cannot be achieved in polygamy and that remarriage often causes resentment and a decrease in the quality of life of spouses and children.
